Winter does more damage to a deck in Barrie than summer sun ever will. Snow sits on horizontal boards for months, holding the wood saturated at temperatures around freezing, and then repeated freeze and thaw cycling in March and April drives moisture into and out of the grain. That cycle splits boards, lifts finish and softens wood fibre. The protection has to be in place before the first snowfall, not after.
Why This Matters to Homeowners
A deck is one of the more expensive structures attached to a house and one of the least protected. It has no roof, no siding, no eave to shed water away from it. Every horizontal surface catches precipitation and holds it.
In Simcoe County the annual cycle is genuinely punishing. Snow accumulates and stays. Underneath that snowpack the wood sits wet and near freezing for months. Come spring, the melt leaves boards saturated for weeks before summer arrives, and then full sun drives ultraviolet degradation on the same surfaces that just spent five months underwater. Manufacturer literature suggesting a five or six year refinish interval was not written for this climate.
The financial case for prevention is straightforward. Cleaning, brightening and recoating a deck that has been maintained is a routine project. Restoring a deck where boards have cupped, split and started to rot means carpentry before any finish work, and replacing boards costs several times what maintaining them does. Structural failure — a stair tread or railing that gives way — moves the problem from cost to safety.
What Actually Damages a Deck Over Winter
Understanding the mechanism matters, because it tells you which preventive steps are worth the effort and which are folklore.
Freeze-thaw cycling is the primary destroyer
Water absorbed into wood expands roughly nine percent when it freezes. That expansion happens inside the cell structure of the board, forcing fibres apart. When it thaws, the fibres do not fully return. Repeat that thirty or forty times across a Simcoe County spring and you get checking along the grain, splitting at board ends, and a general softening of the surface fibre.
This is why the number of cycles matters more than absolute cold. A deep, stable freeze is far less damaging than a March week of plus-five days and minus-five nights. Barrie and Springwater get plenty of the latter.
Snow load holds moisture against the wood
Snow is not simply cold — it is a saturated blanket in direct contact with the board surface. Where snow sits for months, the wood beneath it reaches high moisture content and stays there. That is the precondition for freeze-thaw damage, for mildew and algae growth, and for the tannin bleed that greys cedar.
Elevated decks take the worst of this. Chalet decks in The Blue Mountains and along the Blue Mountain corridor in Collingwood carry unobstructed snow load all winter and then take full summer sun, which is the harshest combination anywhere in our service area. Those decks typically need refinishing every two to three years rather than four or five.
Ground contact and splashback
The lowest components — stair stringers, bottom rails, posts where they meet the ground or deck surface, and joist ends — absorb moisture continuously from snow banking and splashback. This is where rot begins, and it is frequently invisible until a board is probed.
Trapped debris
Leaves, pine needles and organic debris left in the gaps between deck boards through winter hold moisture directly against the board edges and the framing beneath. Debris-packed gaps are one of the most common causes of premature rot at the joist line, and they are entirely preventable.

Fall Preparation That Actually Works
There is a short list of things worth doing before winter, and doing them in the right order matters.
Clear the gaps between boards. This is the highest-value, lowest-effort step. Use a thin tool or a stiff brush to clear leaves and needles out of every gap. Debris in those gaps traps moisture against the board edges and the framing below all winter. On a deck under trees — common across Springwater, Oro-Medonte and Clearview — this alone extends deck life measurably.
Test whether the finish is still sealing. Sprinkle water on the boards. If it beads and sits, the finish is doing its job. If it soaks in and darkens the wood, protection is gone and the deck is absorbing every rainfall and snowmelt. That is a straightforward diagnostic any homeowner can run in thirty seconds, and it tells you whether you are heading into winter protected or unprotected.
Get the finish on before the season closes, not after. If the water test fails, refinishing needs to happen while conditions still allow it.
The reliable window in Simcoe County closes in early October. A deck refinished in spring or early summer gets a full warm season to cure and establish before the first snow load arrives.
A deck that fails the water test in late October is going into winter unprotected, and the honest answer is to plan for spring rather than force a coating in marginal conditions.
Clear the deck surface. Remove furniture, planters and mats. Planters left in place all winter hold moisture against a single spot on the board indefinitely and leave a permanently marked ring. Rubber-backed mats do the same thing and trap water underneath.
Check and reset fasteners. Nail or screw heads that have risen above the surface indicate seasonal movement from repeated wetting and drying. A protruding fastener catches a shovel blade, and it is also a direct water entry path into the board interior. Reset them before winter.
Look at the structure, not just the surface. Probe the base of posts, stair stringers and any board that looks discoloured with a screwdriver. If it goes in easily, that is rot, and it needs carpentry rather than a coat of stain.

Snow Removal and De-Icing Mistakes
More decks are damaged by well-intentioned winter maintenance than by neglect. These are the errors that cause real harm.
Metal shovels. A steel-edged shovel gouges softwood and strips finish off the board surface in a single pass. Use a plastic or poly shovel, and keep the blade edge intact — a chipped plastic blade does the same damage as metal.
Shovelling across the boards. Always shovel parallel to the board direction, not across it. Working across the grain catches board edges, splinters the surface and levers up any fastener that has begun to rise.
Chipping at ice. Ice bonded to a deck surface should be left to melt or treated with a wood-safe product, never chipped. Chipping takes finish and wood fibre off with the ice.
Rock salt and standard de-icers. This is the most damaging mistake and the most common. Sodium chloride is corrosive to fasteners and connectors, damages wood fibre and is destructive to adjacent plantings. Calcium chloride is worse for wood.
If de-icing is necessary, use a product specifically rated as safe for wood decking, and use the minimum quantity that achieves traction.
Sand provides traction with no chemical effect at all, which makes it the safest option for a deck. It does need sweeping off in spring, and on beachfront properties in Wasaga Beach sand is already doing enough abrading.
Piling snow in one spot. Concentrating cleared snow in a single area creates a load point and a moisture reservoir. Spread it or clear it off the deck entirely.
Clearing to bare board every time. Leaving an inch of snow rather than scraping to the surface is easier on the finish and provides insulation. The goal is safe passage and load management, not a spotless deck in January.

Which Products and Approaches Survive This Climate
Product selection has a large effect on how a deck handles winter, and the distinction that matters most is film-forming versus penetrating.
A film-forming finish — solid colour stain or deck paint — sits on top of the wood. It covers well and holds colour longest on vertical surfaces like railings and skirting. On horizontal deck boards in this climate it is a liability. Water penetrating any small breach in the film gets trapped underneath where it cannot escape, and the coating lifts in sheets. The next refinish then requires stripping, which is the most labour-intensive preparation in the trade.
A penetrating stain soaks into the grain rather than forming a surface film. It wears by gradually thinning rather than peeling, which means the next refinish is a clean, brighten and recoat rather than a strip. For horizontal surfaces in Simcoe County this is the correct choice in nearly every case.
Within penetrating stains, pigment is what provides ultraviolet protection. Clear sealers preserve natural wood appearance and offer good moisture resistance but very little ultraviolet defence, which is why they need reapplication most frequently — often annually on exposed decks. Semi-transparent stains are the workhorse for this region: the grain shows through, the pigment blocks ultraviolet degradation, and wear is gradual and even.
Exposure changes the specification. Beachfront decks in Wasaga Beach deal with tracked sand acting as a continuous abrasive, which strongly favours penetrating products because a film gets scoured open. Lakefront decks in Innisfil, Oro-Medonte and Orillia take intense afternoon sun off the water plus wind-driven moisture, and cedar there is prone to tannin bleed and rapid greying. Shaded decks in wooded Springwater and Clearview properties need a mildew-resistant specification because they hold morning moisture for hours.
What It Costs and What Affects the Number
Deck refinishing is priced on total coatable surface area and existing condition, not floor square footage. This surprises homeowners regularly, and the reason is vertical detail: railings, spindles and stairs frequently represent more coatable area than the deck floor. Every spindle has four faces. Every stair has a tread, riser and stringer. A deck with sixty spindles and three stair runs is a substantially larger job than an open platform of identical dimensions.
Existing condition is the other major driver. A deck refinished two or three years ago needs cleaning, brightening and a fresh coat. A deck left untreated for eight or ten years, fully greyed with lifting grain, needs extensive cleaning and sanding and absorbs considerably more stain — old dry cedar and weathered pressure treated lumber can double material consumption. A deck with a failing solid colour film requires stripping, which adds one to two days.
On timeline: a standard refinish spans three to five calendar days, and it cannot be compressed into one. Day one is cleaning and brightening. Days two and three are drying, which is not negotiable. Staining is one day for most residential decks. Any contractor offering to clean and stain a deck in a single day is skipping the drying stage, and staining damp wood produces blotchy colour, poor penetration and early failure.
A note on cheap quotes: the step most commonly omitted is brightening. Cleaners are typically alkaline and leave the wood pH elevated, which prevents even stain absorption. A brightener neutralises that and opens the grain. Skipping it saves an hour and costs the homeowner a blotchy finish that fails within a season.
When to Call a Professional
Homeowner territory: clearing gaps, running the water test, removing furniture and planters, safe snow removal, sweeping and basic seasonal cleaning. All of it is worth doing and none of it requires a contractor.
Call a professional in these situations:
- The deck has greyed and needs restoration rather than maintenance. Removing oxidised fibre and correctly brightening the wood determines whether the stain absorbs evenly or blotches.
- A previous film-forming finish is peeling and stripping is required.
- Boards have cupped, split or feel soft underfoot. That is carpentry before it is finishing.
- The deck is elevated. The second and third storey structures common on chalets in The Blue Mountains and Collingwood require safe access to underside framing and tall skirting.
- You ran the water test and it failed, and you want the refinish done inside the window where it will actually cure properly.
